Color services

Your color questions, answered.

Everything you've been wondering about going blonde, maintaining your color, and what it's really like to sit in our chair.

Going blonde
Can I go blonde if I have dark hair? +

Yes, and we do it all the time. The key is being honest about where you're starting and setting a realistic timeline. Going from dark to a beautiful, healthy blonde is absolutely possible, but it often takes more than one session to get there safely. A big factor is the current health and length of your hair, and whether or not you have any artificial color in it already. When you reach out, tell us your current color and your goal. We will always be honest and upfront about the process and what's actually feasible to get you there.

How much do color services cost at Do's & Dye? +

All color services vary depending on the technique, the length and density of your hair, and how many sessions your hair needs to reach the goal. At Do's & Dye, color services start at $265. Before we begin, we'll walk through a detailed consultation, talk through what your hair needs, discuss an estimated price point, and make sure the plan we're building works within your budget and your desired maintenance schedule. We never want cost to catch you off guard.

What's the difference between balayage and highlights? Which is better for blonde? +

Balayage is a freehand painting technique that creates soft, sun-kissed color with a natural, blended grow-out. Highlights (or foils) give you more consistent, even lightness from root to end, and they tend to lift brighter and faster. Neither is inherently better, it really depends on the result you're after. If you want something low-maintenance with a softer regrowth line, balayage is usually the move. If you want bright, all-over blonde, foils might get you there more efficiently. We'll talk through your lifestyle and your vision to figure out which technique, or which combination, makes the most sense for you.

How long does a color appointment take? +

It depends on the service and your hair. Most of our appointments fall in the 2.5 to 3 hour mark. A touch-up can be closer to 2 hours, and a larger transformation can be closer to 4 hours. If you have a limited time window, please let us know ahead of your appointment so we can make sure there's enough time for the service you want to receive.

Maintenance & timing
How often should I get my blonde hair touched up? +

For most blonde clients, every 8 to 12 weeks is a common cadence, but it really depends on your technique and how much grow-out you're comfortable with. Foil highlights tend to need more frequent visits than balayage, which is designed to grow out more seamlessly. We'll talk about your lifestyle and maintenance preferences at your appointment and help you land on a schedule that works for you, not just your hair.

How do I maintain blonde hair between salon visits? +

We recommend a purple shampoo once a week to once every two weeks, depending on how frequently you wash your hair. Ideally you should be washing no more than every other day, in which case once a week for purple shampoo is great. A bond-building treatment or deep conditioner regularly to keep your hair strong. Heat protectant every single time you use a hot tool. And if you're spending time in the sun or the pool, protect your hair. We'll give you personalized product recommendations at your appointment based on your specific color and hair type, because not every blonde needs the same routine.

How do I use purple shampoo for my blonde hair? +

We recommend once a week to once every two weeks, but honestly, how your hair looks is a better indicator than any set schedule. If your color looks great, skip it and use a hydrating shampoo instead. If you're seeing yellow or brassy tones creeping in, it's time.

Start with your regular shampoo first. Think of that as the actual cleanse that removes oil and buildup. Follow with the purple shampoo as your second shampoo and leave it on for 2 to 5 minutes, distributing it as evenly as you can. The more porous areas of your hair will absorb it more quickly, so be cautious on dry ends. Leave it too long and it can actually make your blonde look duller instead of brighter.

One thing worth knowing: purple shampoo cannot lighten your hair. It only neutralizes brassiness. Overuse will make your color look darker, not brighter, so less is more.

Dimensional & low-maintenance color
What is dimensional, lived-in color? +

Dimensional color is one of our specialties at Do's & Dye. Instead of one flat, uniform color, we create depth and movement by blending multiple tones. Think of the natural variation you see in hair that's been in the sun all summer. It looks rich, real, and effortlessly beautiful. Because the grow-out is built into the technique, you're not running back to the salon every 6 weeks to maintain it. Most of our dimensional color clients come in every 12 to 16 weeks, some even longer.

What is grey blending and is it right for me? +

Grey blending is a technique that softens the contrast between your natural grey and the rest of your hair, rather than covering it completely. Instead of a harsh regrowth line every few weeks, you get a seamless, natural-looking blend that grows out beautifully. It's a great option if you're looking for something lower maintenance than traditional root touch-ups, or if you're transitioning to more of your natural grey and want the process to feel intentional and polished. We love this service for clients who want to look put-together without being tied to a tight salon schedule.

Your appointment
What should I expect with a big color transformation? +

Big transformations are exciting, and we take them seriously. Before we touch your hair, we'll talk through your goal, your current color history, and the health of your hair. From there, we'll map out a realistic plan, which might be one session or a few, depending on where you're starting. You should expect a longer appointment, an investment of both time and money, and a commitment to ongoing maintenance. We'll always discuss cost upfront before we begin so you know exactly what you're walking into. You'll never be caught off guard, and you'll always know what to expect before we start.

How should I come prepared for my color appointment? +

Come with clean, dry hair, no more than one or two days since your last wash. This gives us the best lifting ability and allows us to accurately assess your hair color. If you have inspiration photos, bring them. The more we can see what you're drawn to, the better. Be ready to share your color history, especially if you've had any box color, relaxers, or color corrections in the past, because that affects how your hair will lift and process. Most importantly, come with realistic expectations and open communication. We're a team on your hair. The more honest you are with us, the better your results will be.

How do I book a color appointment at Do's & Dye? +

You can call, text, or email us, or book directly online. New clients will be prompted to fill out our new client form so we can gather important information about your hair history and goals before your appointment. This helps us determine how much time to set aside and make sure we're fully prepared for you when you arrive.
